General Statement of Duties

This posting is open until filled.  Serves three interrelated roles within the school:  teacher, instructional partner, and program administrator. The library information specialist models and inspires the intellectual curiosity essential for lifelong learning, promotes intellectual freedom, develops a balanced collection and designs innovative activities and lessons.

Essential Duties

Teacher:

  • Utilizes a broad-based knowledge of the curriculum and Virginia Standards of
  • Learning to integrate research skills with content through both small group and whole class instruction.
  • Takes a leadership role in modeling and teaching the skills necessary to access, evaluate, and use resources effectively and responsibly.
  • Promotes an appreciation of information literacy and recreational reading for lifelong learning and enjoyment.
  • Plans, teaches, and evaluates cooperatively with teachers to ensure the effective integration of information resources and technologies into student learning.
  • Delivers information through a variety of creative activities and instructional practices that involve multiple learning styles.

Instructional Partner:

  • Plans collaboratively with colleagues to identify and develop resources and create lessons/activities that integrate information literacy skills with curricula appropriate for content and grade level.
  • Creates partnerships by attending grade level/department meetings, reviewing pacing charts, serving on the school's leadership team, and participating in other committees such as technology and curriculum committees.
  • Applies new technology to the library media program, including instructional design and the promotion of effective, responsible media use by faculty.  
  • Provides technology leadership to staff by coordinating resources and available facilities and services to support the instructional program.

Program Administrator:

Creates and maintains an inviting, safe environment that fosters intellectual inquiry.

Develops and maintains an up-to-date, culturally diverse collection of print and non-print resources that supports the curriculum and reflects students' interests.

Uses available statistics to assess the library collection and program in order to make related financial and program development decisions.

Coordinates and manages available resources.

Keeps abreast of current library and information trends through professional organizations, literature, and networking with colleagues in other libraries.

Serves as an advocate for the library program and its services in the school and community.

Additional Information


Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

Henrico County Schools reserves the right to begin screening applications and make a selection at any time during the posting period. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible, as positions may be filled prior to the posted closing date.

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will designate select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools. This position qualifies for an Opportunity School stipend of $3,500.

Minimum Requirements

Current teaching certification with endorsement in Library Media.  Masters in Library Science or equivalent degree preferred.
